Best known for his evocative, eccentric lyricism delivered in a signature baritone voice, Singer-Songwriter- Producer Avijit ‘Avi’ Misra seamlessly blends bluesy, folksy grooves with Indian songwriting elements and electronica experiments to paint a musical world that's human, complex and contemporary.
Avi's songs are vivid, whimsical, anthemic and strangely infectious - mixing ironic social commentary with hymnic meditations. His production ethos is refreshingly organic with the multi - instrumentalist often recording vocals, synths, guitars and finger drumming in single takes with minimal editing to retain a performative feel emulating the raw expression of Woodstock era records while using the freshest tools in music production.
Starting out as a folk balladeer in India's underground music scene more than a decade and a half ago, Misra shared the stage with a motley crew of musos that headlined major festivals as Avi And The Uprising. His debut album 'Eyes On The Radio' was released in 2014 to critical acclaim and the band hit the road for a 3 city tour partnered with MTV Indies and Blue Frog.
Misra has since hit the Australian music scene with nationwide radio airplay and strong shows along the East Coast from The Tote to The Brisbane Powerhouse. He released a retrospective solo acoustic live CD 'New Delhi Blues' in 2018 and his Rajasthani folk tinged electronica concept album 'Usha' with a six city India-Australia Tour in 2019.
He released his Melbourne themed darkwave album 'Sketches By The Birrarung' at The Tote in February 2020 right before the pandemic hit and has just launched his fifth album 'Nostalgia' - fashioned from iconic analog synths from the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio Collection.
Other notable achievements include teaching at the Delhi School Of Music, writing for the B.B.C, holding a Senior Diploma in Hindustani Classical Vocal Music, performing as an operatic bass baritone soloist in Giusseppe Verdi's 200'th Year Celebrations, and working in the Australian community arts sector with organizations like The Boite, Wild At Heart and Multicultural Arts Victoria.
